For a journey unlike any other, Norwegian Cruise Line’s all-new Norwegian Aqua sets sail – and standards – sky-high. LLM’s Lisa Curtiss joined the ship on her inaugural journey.
The moment she emerged, majestic against the grey horizon of Lisbon’s shores, there was a collective sigh of relief.
The region had been pummelled by a fierce storm the night before, forcing the port to close – which meant this gleaming new jewel in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet had to weather wild waves before finally reaching safe harbour and welcoming her first fortunate guests.
A new class
Aqua builds on the award-winning Prima Class and raises the bar with bold design, thoughtful innovation, and an elegant yet futuristic aesthetic
Norwegian Aqua doesn’t merely mark the arrival of a new vessel – she introduces an entirely new class. As the first of the Prima Plus Class, Aqua builds on the award-winning Prima Class and raises the bar with bold design, thoughtful innovation, and an elegant yet futuristic aesthetic. The result is a ship that feels cutting-edge but still carries the polished comfort that luxury travellers appreciate.
The brand’s newly coined philosophy, “Experience More at Sea,” isn’t just a slogan.
It’s woven into every aspect of Aqua’s offering – from the sweeping, sculptural curves of the three-storey Penrose Atrium, awash with natural light, to the elevated dining concepts and reimagined entertainment spaces.
“This is a milestone moment for Norwegian Cruise Line,” said David J. Herrera, NCL’s president, addressing guests shortly after embarkation.
“Norwegian Aqua is designed to offer our guests MORE – more wide-open space, more thrills, more culinary experiences, and more immersive entertainment.” Over the course of our five-night cruise, his words rang consistently true.
Luxurious cabins
Spacious and smartly designed accommodation provide restful havens onboard the ship
As we delved deeper into what Aqua had to offer, it became increasingly clear that accommodations were a real standout. From the comfort of the staterooms to the sumptuous indulgence of The Haven, Norwegian has poured careful thought into every corner.
The standard staterooms feel far from basic – each is surprisingly spacious and smartly designed to feel like a restful haven rather than a functional necessity.
Balcony staterooms in particular offer a real sense of escape, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto private balconies that invite in panoramic sea views. Inside, guests are treated to high-quality bedding, memory foam mattresses, a convenient sitting area, 24-hour room service, and the ability to pre-book dining and entertainment.
Club Balcony Suites take things up a notch, offering more space, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, and a few thoughtful extras such as complimentary laundry or pressing services.
The experience feels special from the moment you walk in – as though every detail has been considered to make your stay just that little bit smoother.
Even solo travellers are thoughtfully catered to. Aqua’s dedicated solo cabins are compact yet comfortable, offering privacy and clever storage solutions that ensure nothing feels cramped.
These are ideal for those travelling independently but still wanting access to the full onboard experience.
The Haven Duplex Suite features an opulent two-storey layout
And then there’s The Haven – Norwegian’s signature “ship within a ship” concept, which really does deliver on its promise. Tucked away at the top of the vessel, it provides a private world of ultra-luxury for those seeking an elevated experience.
The Haven guests enjoy exclusive access to private areas such as a sundeck, hot tubs, a stylish lounge and bar, and The Haven Restaurant – which serves a bespoke gourmet menu in an intimate, elegant setting. The infinity pool is incredible!
Service here is exemplary. From embarkation to debarkation, guests are treated to personal touches including priority boarding, an escort on and off the ship at each port, concierge service for booking activities, and dedicated butlers available round-the-clock.
The Haven suites themselves are nothing short of spectacular. The 3-Bedroom Duplex Suite offers an opulent two-storey layout with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, separate dining and living areas, and a huge balcony for uninterrupted sea views.
The Premier Owner’s Suite and the Deluxe Owner’s Suite are similarly showstopping – with spacious living quarters, stylish décor, expansive balconies, and indulgent touches like outdoor hot tubs and jetted showers. It’s hard not to feel completely spoiled.
Dining that delights and surprises
Thai speciality restaurant Sukhothai’s menu is a beautifully curated tour of Thai flavours – vibrant, layered, and deeply satisfying
As a self-confessed food lover, I approached Aqua’s dining options with high expectations – and they were easily exceeded. Norwegian Aqua features 17 dining venues and 18 bars and lounges, which is impressive in itself, but even more so is the level of quality and variety across the board.
The much-anticipated debut of Sukhothai, Norwegian’s first-ever Thai speciality restaurant, was a revelation. Richly adorned with carved wooden panels and ambient lantern lighting, the space feels immersive and authentic.
The menu is a beautifully curated tour of Thai flavours – vibrant, layered, and deeply satisfying. Every dish I tried was plated with care, and the balance of spices was pitch-perfect. It’s the sort of restaurant that could hold its own in any major city, let alone at sea.
Another surprise was Planterie, a quiet revolution in the cruise dining landscape. This is NCL’s first entirely plant-based restaurant, nestled discreetly within the Indulge Food Hall.
What impressed me most was that it didn’t feel like it was trying to ‘convert’ anyone – instead, it offered flavour-forward, imaginative dishes that simply happened to be vegan.
Nama, the sushi and sashimi restaurant, serves impeccably fresh seafood with understated elegance
Of the other venues, the two Japanese restaurants stood out for very different reasons. Nama, the sushi and sashimi restaurant, served impeccably fresh seafood with understated elegance. The simplicity of the dishes allowed the quality of the ingredients to shine.
It felt almost meditative to sit at the counter, watching the chefs work with quiet precision, and the attention to presentation made every plate a visual joy.
In contrast, Hasuki delivered a completely different – and wildly entertaining – experience. A theatrical teppanyaki restaurant full of energy, flair, and laughter, it was immense fun. Our chef was as skilled at cracking jokes as he was at flipping eggs and slicing steak with lightning speed, and the food was excellent – perfectly cooked and full of bold, satisfying flavours.
This is the kind of dining that becomes a highlight of the whole cruise.
Then there was Le Bistro – NCL’s classic French restaurant. It offered a quieter, more elegant experience, perfect for an unhurried evening of indulgence.
The setting was intimate and beautifully appointed, the service polished but friendly, and the wine list was particularly strong. My meal was rich, traditional, and deliciously satisfying – everything you’d hope from a refined French bistro at sea.
Spa and wellness
The Mandara Spa is a sophisticated, serene space designed for deep relaxation
While Aqua offers plenty of high-energy fun, it also caters beautifully to those seeking rest and restoration. The Mandara Spa® is a sophisticated, serene space designed for deep relaxation, and the expansive Thermal Suite forms the heart of it all.
The Vitality Pool and Salt Flotation Pool provide warm, enveloping water therapies that ease away tension, while the Clay Sauna and Charcoal Sauna offer detoxifying heat in atmospheric settings.
The Salt Room, inspired by traditional European salt caves, soothes both the skin and the senses, while the Ice Room acts as a refreshing counterpoint – boosting circulation and leaving you feeling invigorated.
For a multi-sensory reset, the Experiential Shower offers a choreographed dance of light, water, and scent.
There’s also a lovely Relaxation Area, with heated loungers positioned to face the sea through floor-to-ceiling windows – an ideal spot to drift away in silence.
The adjoining Pulse Fitness Centre is equally impressive, with panoramic ocean views and a full range of top-tier equipment. Group classes are available too, including yoga and TRX, for those who like a bit of structure to their workouts.
A wide menu of treatments rounds out the spa experience, from hot stone massages to advanced facials and acupuncture.
The full-service salon ensures you can look as good as you feel, whether you fancy a blow dry before dinner or a pampering manicure. My full body massage and high tech facial combo was fantastic.
Spaces that invite you to breathe
With its elegant day beds and panoramic sea views, the pool deck is a sanctuary of sun-drenched serenity
Despite Aqua’s impressive size and wealth of offerings, one of the most surprising and welcome aspects was how calm and spacious the ship felt. Norwegian Cruise Line has clearly prioritised breathing room – both literal and metaphorical – throughout the ship’s design.
Public spaces are thoughtfully laid out, with sweeping lounges, stylish seating areas, and wide walkways that manage to feel luxurious without being ostentatious.
Whether you’re moving through the ship or simply sitting back to soak in the surroundings, it’s easy to forget you’re aboard a vessel carrying thousands. You never feel crowded or hurried – quite the opposite, in fact.
The pool deck deserves particular mention.
With its reimagined layout, elegant new day beds, and panoramic sea views, it became a personal sanctuary of sun-drenched serenity. It’s a space designed as much for quiet contemplation as for casual lounging, and its sense of openness is a welcome contrast to many cruise ship pool areas, which can feel rather hectic.
Elsewhere on the ship, Norwegian’s brand-new selfie sculpture – a delightfully tongue-in-cheek nod to the digital age – quickly became an iconic focal point. Playful and polished, it strikes a perfect balance between fun and sophistication. It’s Instagram-ready, of course, but also oddly uplifting – a little reminder that luxury needn’t always take itself too seriously.
Activities galore
The Aqua Slidecoaster is a world-first hybrid of rollercoaster and waterslide
If you’re in the mood for something more exhilarating than a quiet stroll or sunbathe, Norwegian Aqua certainly delivers. This is a ship that dares to entertain in bold and surprising ways, with high-octane activities that would feel at home in a theme park.
Chief among them is the Aqua Slidecoaster – a world-first hybrid of rollercoaster and waterslide that defies expectations in the most spectacular way.
Even describing it feels slightly surreal.
The engineering alone is astounding, but the experience is genuinely thrilling – soaring high above the deck, with the wind in your hair and jaw-dropping ocean views all around, it’s a moment of pure, unfiltered joy. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or simply curious, it’s not to be missed.
Another surprise came in the form of the Glow Court, a digital sports complex located mid-ship. During the day, its interactive LED floor transforms into a high-tech playground – perfect for basketball, football or simply watching the clever visuals adapt to different games.
By night, it shifts into something entirely different: a sleek, pulsing club illuminated with iridescent light that reflects hypnotically off the chrome and glass. It’s bold, immersive, and just the right amount of futuristic.
Just a few decks away, the Aqua Game Zone captured my attention with its smart mix of nostalgia and innovation. Inspired by NCL’s Galaxy Pavilion, the space combines old-school arcade charm with cutting-edge virtual reality in a way that appeals across generations.
It’s fun, it’s imaginative, and, crucially, it never feels like a compromise – it’s a fully realised entertainment experience that could hold its own on land.
Evening entertainment
The headline show, “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince”, is a riot of sound, colour, and electricity
As day turns into night, Norwegian Aqua transforms yet again – this time into a stage for spectacle. Entertainment aboard this ship is ambitious and inventive, and it’s clear that the creative team have pulled out all the stops.
The headline show, “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince”, was a riot of sound, colour, and electricity. A dynamic theatrical concert from start to finish, it felt more like a top-tier West End production than a cruise ship performance. From the first unmistakable chords of “Let’s Go Crazy” to the emotionally charged encore of “Purple Rain,” it had the entire audience on its feet. The vocal performances were sensational, the lighting design sublime, and the sheer energy in the theatre was unforgettable.
Just as impactful in a very different way was “Elements: The World Expanded”, a mesmerising blend of aerial performance, illusion, and cinematic projection. The production explores the four classical elements – earth, air, fire, and water – in a sequence of stunning vignettes. It’s immersive, dreamlike, and deeply atmospheric, with moments that quite literally took my breath away. As a visual and technical feat, it’s a triumph – and a clear indication that Norwegian is pushing boundaries in onboard entertainment.
Where next? Aqua’s grand journey
Norwegian Aqua will grace the shores of Miami, Port Canaveral and New York City
After her dazzling debut in Europe, Norwegian Aqua is set to spread her wings even further. She’ll grace the shores of Miami, Port Canaveral (Orlando), and New York City, offering a kaleidoscope of itineraries across the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda, with voyages already planned well into 2027.
For guests seeking adventure, variety, and sunshine, Aqua’s global journey offers plenty of temptation. But it’s not just the destinations that entice – it’s the sense of discovery and possibility that this ship represents.
In summary
I’ll admit it – I’d long assumed that large cruise ships weren’t for me. I imagined them as noisy, overwhelming, and lacking in the kind of peace I seek on holiday. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Norwegian Aqua was a revelation. Somehow, she manages to be bold yet serene, exciting yet calming, luxurious yet playful. It’s entirely possible to find solitude and serenity when you need to recharge your social battery – but equally easy to dive headfirst into exhilarating experiences and vibrant social scenes when the mood strikes.
Whether you’re in search of rest, adventure, indulgence or entertainment, Aqua delivers – often in ways that surprise and delight. She’s a ship of contrasts, yes, but also of harmony. And I suspect that’s what makes her so special.
