Florence’s newest boutique escape, The James Suite Hotel Firenze 1564, opened its doors this year, unveiling a captivating 16th-century Florentine palazzo just a few steps from the city’s artistic and cultural treasures.

This restoration is the vision of designer and architect James Cavagnari, who transformed his childhood home into a 14-key five-star retreat.

Through a meticulous selection of the finest Italian materials, textures and finishes, he has crafted a collection of one-of-a-kind suites, each a story of beauty, intimacy and quiet luxury.

At the heart of the hotel lies the 1564 Lounge Bar, an ode to the art of slowing down and savouring the moment, alongside the James Restaurant, where cuisine becomes a dialogue between tradition and innovation. More than a place to stay, The James Suite Hotel Firenze 1564 is a destination to inspire – and to be remembered.

“In the heart of my childhood home – a Renaissance residence built in 1564, adorned with vaulted ceilings and fading frescoes – I set out to create more than just a boutique hotel: a narrative retreat where each suite whispers its own story,” explained Cavagnari.

“I wanted to weave together the quiet elegance of heritage with the soulful craftsmanship of Tuscany. I believe that memory, when paired with artistry, can evoke something truly timeless.”

The heritage

The palazzo that now houses The James bears the year of its birth engraved on it: 1564. A well-known year in which Michelangelo died, while Galileo and Shakespeare came into the world.

Born as a convent, the building in fact retains the original structure of the old Renaissance mercantile courts: an understated facade, an off-centre portal, barrel-vaulted rooms, and an inner courtyard that has remained intact over the centuries. Today, these ancient volumes accommodate a new idea of hospitality: cultured, discreet, deeply rooted in beauty.

The entrance is a rarefied space that invites wonder. The walls, hand-painted in shades of sky and moss, come alive with plants that embellish the walls and reveal the soul of the secret garden.

At the core of The James is James Cavagnari himself-architect, host, and storyteller.

Born in London in 1964 and profoundly rooted in Florence, Cavagnari has created over 200 boutiques for Salvatore Ferragamo worldwide and led the re-design of Bulgari’s global retail identity. His design legacy stretches from Tuscany and Sicily to Central Asia, the South of France and London- yet it is in The James that his vision becomes most personal.

The concept and design

Surrounded by the beauty of Florence, the Suites invite guests into a world suspended between art, design, and intimacy. Refined materials, soft lighting, and carefully curated details shape spaces that are both theatrical and deeply emotional, with each one telling its own unique story.

From rich velvets and glossy ceramics to contemporary artworks and vintage furnishings, every suite becomes a living stage where memory meets imagination. Tailored touches and artistic expressions create an atmosphere of refined elegance that inspires both reflection and wonder. From a welcoming living area to a serene sleeping space and bathrooms that shine like hidden jewels, every element speaks of elegance, well-being and vision.

The British connection is rooted in Cavagnari’s English heritage, which inspired each and every room of the Palazzo. Among the many highlights, The James Suite Hotel Firenze is also proud to house are markable piece of royal history: the late Queen Elizabeth II’s mobile wardrobe.

Reflecting the refined spirit and narrative depth of the hotel itself, this unique artefact embodies elegance, and a quietly captivating cultural story.

The mahogany wooden wardrobe features exquisitely crafted compartments for every item of the Queen’s travel closet-from tailored garments to scarves, wraps, and even socks-offering a rare glimpse into the royal life. Completing the mobile wardrobe is a striking portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth to which it belonged to.

In addition to the suites, the property features The James Restaurant and the 1564 Lounge Bar, both offer  an informal yet distinctive food and beverage experience where traditional dishes are presented with a Mediterranean twist. Signature cocktails feature rare spirits, homemade infusions and forgotten botanicals, served in an intimate setting of velvet textures, candlelight and curated playlists.

The heart of the hotel, the space aims to make guests feel like they are a part of the city’s enduring story, standing on the threshold of history and modernity. Natural wood, artisanal flooring, brass details and earthy tones, along with a multi-tiered, vibrant pink chandelier, create a space that is both refined and inviting, where design and cuisine become one.
