The Calanques National Park stretches from Marseille to Cassis in the south of France with breathtakingly beautiful landscapes for each calanque.
From Marseille’s ninth arrondissement to the edges of Cassis, the Calanques stretch for 20 kilometres along the coast and reach up to four kilometres inland. Since 2012, the area has been protected as part of a national park, preserving its secluded coves, hidden trails and flourishing eco systems both above and below the waterline.
Which Calanque should you visit?
With so many calanques to choose from, each one offers its own experience. Some are ideal for hiking, others are perfect for a swim and a stretch of sun. A few might take a bit of a climb that leaves you breathless, but so will the view. And somehow, that makes it all the better.
If you’re after that hold-your-breathe moment: Calanque d’En-Vau is the one.
The hike can be steep in parts, or you can arrive by boat, but either way you’ll find yourself in a cove enclosed by tall cliffs, with water clear enough to see straight to the bottom. In fact, this is where you’ll find some of the most photogenic waters in the region. It’s a favourite for climbers, photographers, and anyone who doesn’t mind earning their swim.

If you want the Calanques without the climb: Calanque de Sormiou is a great pick
Calanque de Sormiou is one of the easiest Calanques to reach, making it ideal for a slower, more relaxed visit. The path is fairly easy, especially outside peak season when you can drive most of the way. There’s also a small restaurant by the shore if you fancy something local. The water is perfect for swimming, for a gentle float, or even for spending an entire day doing nothing at all.
For charm and a touch of local life: Calanque de Morgiou offers something a little more authentic
Morgiou is one of the few Calanques that still carries the spirit of a working harbour. There’s a feel of familiarity, with fishing boats tied loosely across the edge, cabins tucked along the shore and the sense of calm that comes from a place left just as it was.
For more adventure, head toward the Cosquer Cave. Hidden underwater, it holds cave art over 30,000 years old, etched by some of the earliest coastal dwellers.
With so many more to choose from, these are just a few to give you a taste. Whether you stick to the well-trodden or wander to something more secluded, there’s no wrong way to experience the Calanques. Though (if you ask me) there is a better way.
Discover the Calanques with Bleu Evasion, a private boat tour that lets you experience the span in one seamless, sun-soaked journey. Departing from Marseille’s Vieux-Port and cruising all the way to the edges of Cassis, you’ll explore the most iconic spots, with time to swim, unwind and soak in the beauty from sea to shore.
Bleu Evasion offers a seamless way to explore your own slice of the Calanques in complete comfort. Tailored by an English-speaking skipper at the helm, who knows every curve of the coast. Glide across open water in complete privacy, with every detail taken care of. Snorkelling gear, paddle boards, soft drinks, fuel and even Go Pros, are all included. So you can simply step onboard and enjoy the day as it comes.
Want to make it extra? Add tubing, champagne, or time your trip to catch that golden light as the sun dips behind the cliffs. Whether you spend the afternoon swimming through clear water, doing activities or just stretching out and taking it all in, this is the South of France at its most private and most beautiful.
At the Calanques in the South of France, wild beauty trumps pricey beach clubs.
Tips: Have that kind of day
The kind where the suns beaming, the snacks and book are packed, and everything just flows, without worry.
Start early to beat the heat and catch the stillness before the crowd rolls in and wear proper shoes (the trails aren’t flip-flop friendly). Signal can be pretty patchy so download your maps ahead of time and check for trail closures, especially in summer months.
And if you’d rather skip the walking altogether, consider a boat day with Bleu Evasion. You’ll get the swims, the views, and the sun, just with a bit more ease. Glide along the coast, anchor in quiet coves, dive in and indulge in good food, great company, and the kind of memories that stay with you.
Visiting with respect
Being here is a privilege, and keeping it beautiful is part of the deal. The area is home to rare wildlife and fragile natural habitats, both on land and beneath the surface. Stick to marked trails, take any rubbish with you and skip the fires, especially in summer when everything’s dry and dusty.
It doesn’t take much, just a bit of care and awareness. And in return, you get to experience the place at its best
