Far from the glitz of more ostentatious resorts, Maafushivaru combines laid-back elegance with heartfelt hospitality. It’s ideal for discerning travellers who prioritise tranquillity, design and soul over scene and spectacle.

A scenic 25-minute seaplane flight from Malé airport brings guests to this little gem, with mesmerising aerial views of turquoise atolls setting the mood for what’s to come. A warm island welcome awaits on arrival at the jetty, followed by a smooth check-in process that takes you directly from sea to villa in minutes.

As you sink your feet into the soft, flour-fine sand, the intimate scale of Maafushivaru immediately soothes. Winding sandy pathways, fringed with hibiscus and coconut palms, weave through elegant, thatched-roof villas. There’s no traffic, no disturbance, only the natural rhythms of ocean waves and rustling palms. It’s one of the prettiest Maldives resorts I’ve been to.

The standout accommodation is undoubtedly the sunset overwater villas with pool. Spacious and private, these villas are suspended above the lagoon with dreamy west-facing views. Interiors are chic yet relaxed, blending white, wood and soft neutral tones, vaulted ceilings, and sliding glass doors that maximise the views.

Inside, you’ll find a king-size bed, lounge area, coffee machine, wine fridge, and clever room dividers that allow for privacy between the bath area and living space. Outdoors, the expansive deck includes a large infinity pool, shaded lounging area, sunbeds, a dining table, and direct steps into the turquoise sea.

If, like me, you enjoy watching a dramatic Maldivian thunderstorm roll in, the shaded section of the deck allows you to do so in comfort – dry and mesmerised. The sleek bathrooms inside feature freestanding bathtubs, twin vanities, and thoughtful amenities worthy of any luxury escape.

Prefer a more grounded setting? The beach pool villas are equally indulgent. Surrounded by tropical foliage just steps from the ocean, these villas offer semi-open-air bathrooms, where you can shower under the stars, a private courtyard garden, and a peaceful pool sanctuary.

They’re ideal for couples seeking a blend of natural immersion and chic island design.

Despite its size, the island’s dining options are delightfully varied.

Cuisine Gallery serves as the main restaurant for breakfast and dinner, with buffet and live cooking stations offering international cuisine – from tropical fruit and Maldivian curries to Mediterranean staples and rotating themed evenings.

Moodhu Grill, a stylish beachfront venue, specialises in premium meats and seafood, served à la carte in semi-private settings that feel both intimate and indulgent.

Koto, perched over water, is an engaging Japanese fusion spot where dishes are flamboyantly cooked on a sizzling teppanyaki grill. Think wagyu beef, lobster, garlic rice served with flair and a splash of fun.

One of the most special experiences is the destination dining option. Whether it’s a private beach dinner, an exclusive sandbank setup, or a villa meal under the stars, the resort arranges beautiful, personalised moments you won’t soon forget.

Don’t miss Art-I-san, either. Located at the island’s highest point, it offers sweeping ocean views and is another excellent à la carte dining option with a creative, romantic twist.

I was genuinely impressed by the consistently high standard of cuisine, beverages, and service across all venues.

Days on Maafushivaru flow with calm ease. Sunrise yoga or a dip in the lagoon makes for a refreshing start. Some take breakfast on their deck before heading out to snorkel the colourful house reef, which lies just metres from the shore and teems with fish, corals, and the occasional reef shark.

The resident marine biologist offers eco-educational reef talks and guided snorkelling adventures, and the resort also organises off-island excursions to swim with manta rays and turtles.

Back on dry land, the Navasana Spa is a tranquil oasis. Tucked among tropical plants, its treatment rooms offer a menu inspired by Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian wellness traditions. There’s also an ocean-view infinity spa pool, a well-equipped gym, boutique, reading library, and a photography studio – perfect for commemorating your stay.

The staff are genuinely warm, not simply polished. From bartenders who recall your favourite drink to housekeepers who add little personalised touches, service here feels authentic.

Unlike many smaller islands, Maafushivaru offers an impressive number of experiences, dining venues, and serene spaces. It never feels crowded or commercial, and the generous all-inclusive plan makes indulging even more carefree.

This resort doesn’t shout about luxury, it quietly lives it. The sunsets are glorious, the food is exceptional, and the atmosphere is one of sincere relaxation and elegance.

Whether you’re unwinding in your overwater pool at dusk, sipping an iced coffee in the café, or snorkelling just steps from your villa, Maafushivaru delivers a true Maldivian dream.

For me, it’s absolutely one of the resorts I’ve enjoyed the most out of the 35 plus five-star ones I’ve stayed at, and I honestly can’t wait to return – next time with my family in tow.
