#PlanYourDreamTrip / Lucky Cat Mayfair By Gordon Ramsay, Grosvenor Square in London / By Anuja Gaur

LLM’s Anuja Gaur heads to Gordon Ramsay’s vivacious, nouvelle-cuisine sanctum of Lucky Cat.

Lucky Cat Mayfair

In the ever-evolving sphere of epicurean fine-dining theatre, there are but just a fistful of chefs who can command and conquer the kind of global culinary recognition and intrigue, as the legendary cooking maestro and grande-cuisine restauranteur, Gordon Ramsay.

A glittering gastronomical career which has stretched across a stellar three decades and counting, Gordon Ramsay’s name alone has stirred up a potent mix of luminous Michelin stars, charming television charisma and a ferocious deck of standards demonstrating the upmost meticulous calibre, in turn building up a formidable empire of over fifty restaurants around the globe.

Since the time of his self-titled three-star flagship Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London’s well-heeled Chelsea locale, Gordon’s modern French destination has paved the bon viveur path to a delectable assemblage of worldly fine dining eateries.

This iconic portfolio includes the high-octane Gordon Ramsay Steak in the neon haven of Las Vegas, to Singapore’s rustic Bread Street Kitchen hub while training under the wing of cooking legends of the likes of Marco Pierre White and Guy Savoy to name a few, all of whom had played a crucial role in sharpening his technique within the countless kitchens that ran on pulsating adrenaline and exquisite artistry, entwined with cultivating a brand where impeccable excellence is the non-negotiable baseline.

But for all the many quintessentially classic heritage havens, Mr Ramsay has quite rather been the agile individual sharply attuned to the high maintenance cravings and desires of his glossy Gen Z diners, which leads me to the introduction of the vivacious, nouvelle-cuisine sanctum of Lucky Cat.

A bold and sensual foray into the world of contemporary Asian dining, the slick settings of this fresh glitzy eating house had unveiled its polished doors to the capital’s café society camps in June 2019, armed with a quest to capture the cherished soul of Tokyo’s 1930s kissas mingled with Shanghai’s golden-age nightclub.

This together had conjured up a vibrant picture of late-night izakayas and clandestine drinking dens, all wrapped up in a sybaritic cocoon of shimmering Mayfair gloss.

It was only a matter of time that, in February 2025, Lucky Cat would extend its well groomed claws eastward with a new reveal in Bishopsgate, unveiling its signature opulence with a dazzling launch spectacle of the upmost grandeur. Chiselled, tanned models, besuited financiers and media darlings had all together gathered beneath gleaming golden koi chandeliers, whilst sipping and savouring their way through invigorating yuzu cocktails and crispy soft-shell crab bao to celebrate the brand’s prestigious growing reign as a sultry dining hideaway for only the most elite top title editors, international jetsetters, and couture clad West End insiders around the sphere.

Lucky Cat Mayfair interiors

The interiors of Lucky Cat can be viewed as a fine masterclass in immersive elegance, as ink-black walls glimmered beneath antique golden lighting

The supreme vision and ultimate quest since the time of Lucky Cat’s dusky emergence has been to marry the precision and treasured legacy of Asian cuisine and its toothsome flavours, together with the dynamic firepower of modern British gastronomy.

The concept is further elevated by creating a space that’s theatrically immersive, and unapologetically glamorous which, in turn, has brought to us a lucrative dining notion that feels less like a luxury restaurant and more a mood that echoes brazen sensuality, with a magnetically cosmopolitan aura.

Perched discreetly amongst the leafy urbane backdrop of Grosvenor Square, Lucky Cat’s blacked-out façade appears to evoke a discreet spirit that is enigmatic as a lacquered jewellery box, which hints at the gleaming treasures inside without ever revealing too much to the discerning visitant as they step their polished heels within the alluring low-lit entryway, that chooses to whisper rather than shout.

A sombre yet dashing milieu designed and created by the acclaimed interiors champion Afroditi Krassa, the space of Lucky Cat can be viewed as a fine masterclass in immersive elegance, as ink-black walls glimmered beneath antique golden lighting, while geometric screens had cast honeycomb shadows across polished wooden settings and oxblood leather.

Curvaceous booths had also perfectly invited a sense of hushed conversation to the table, whilst intricate embellishments of antique mirrors reflected flickers of candlelight next to hand-painted tile adornments, not to neglect the luminous namesake bronze cat figurines set down as a symbolic nod of fortune, to wink and grin away at their diners from each nook and corner.

The true tour de force, however, rested with the culinary stage – the open live kitchen, where the chef brigade were gliding like agile dancers amongst the balmy flickering flames from the wok station, and fresh sashimi was sliced with the precision of a calligraphy master under a twinkling Murano glass chandelier, befitted with swaying features to showcase that every detail is deliberate, and every moment designed.

The evening was set into motion with the head-turning aperitif of the Ureshi, translating to the aptly Japanese title of ‘happy’ which saw a joyful union of floral spiced Roku gin, and rich Umwahu plum wine uplifted with a zesty lick of mandarin sherbet to give rise to a balanced sharp yet honeyed profile, that was masterfully shaken up with the deft hand of a true bona-fide mixologist.

Announcing their toothsome arrival with theatrical flair soon after the final sip were an array of opening snacks starting with the crispy baby squid demonstrating a study in contrasts, as golden crispy crunch unearthed a tender brine like interior lit up a tangy lime spiced kick, before tucking into the helping of earthy charred padron peppers, giving way to a smoked and tantalising vegetal hit.

A range of tasty concoctions can be ordered from the 9 Lives Menu

Hot on the small plates warm up was the unexpected elegance of the helping of pea guacamole, where a lick of wasabi had created a textural dance together with the buttery avocado and creamed edamame all elevated with an oceanic luxury crunch from the delicate nori crisps, whilst the colourful Zanmai sushi array flaunted pure artistry in each subtly seasoned piece from the silken otoro (fatty tuna), to the glistening yellowtail.

Let’s not also forget the legendary GFC; aka Gordon’s Fried Chicken exhibiting the kind of soul food you’d dream of at 2am as tender hearty thigh meat came marinated in a white soy and silken buttermilk, to be fried to a golden hush and served with a sticky miso-maple sauce that verged on the obscene.

If the appetisers were a flirty enticement then the entrees were saporous seduction on a platter.

The Korean-spiced black cod arrived lacquered and glistening, with a caramelised surface paving the path to a buttery yielding centre flesh right as the gochujang marinade provided a powerful umami tinged heat, concluded with touch of honey coaxed sweetness to cut through the spice.

The A5 Japanese sirloin was also quite the sublime dish served in reverent slices which melted like smooth foie gras.

The prime A-list cut continued to whisper notes of nori and smoke that paired in harmony with the pale Riviera finesse of the chilled Rock Angel Rosé 2023, bustling with ripe pink grapefruit and wild strawberries as the sweet treat finale of a spiced warm apple treacle cake, coupled with velvety crème fraiche ice cream proved the pinnacle of soft decadent indulgence and a flawless end to the evening; just like a bejewelled silver spoon through dainty ambrosial silk.

In a nutshell

This hedonistic W1 den is so much more than a lavish luxe eatery; it is also a delectable experience staged with the precision of a cinematic set and the warmth of genuine hospitality, where Gordon Ramsay’s vision has translated beautifully into this East-meets-West dining temple, where flavours are bold, detail is everything, and the atmosphere is always a few degrees above fabulous.

From its seductive interiors to its theatrical cocktails; from its flawless sushi to that smoky aubergine and silk-like sirloin, Lucky Cat seduces its refined diners in every sense in a place that rewards curiosity, demands attention and invites indulgence.

Whether you’re dining with fashionista mavens, closing deals over rock cod or simply escaping the city’s grey, this is designer Mayfair dining at its most hypnotic.
