Some islands seem to have it all: stunning natural beauty, effortless design, authentic warmth, and a sense of place that lingers long after you leave. Le Méridien Maldives Resort and Spa, located on the postcard-perfect private island of Thilamaafushi in the Lhaviyani Atoll, is one of them.

A five-star member of the Marriott Bonvoy collection, this retreat blends European style and Maldivian soul in a way that feels unforced and quietly elegant.

For couples, families, or solo travellers craving more than just turquoise views and beachy luxury, it’s a welcome breath of fresh air.

What struck me most during my stay was how seamlessly it brings together creativity, sustainability, and genuine hospitality. There’s plenty to love here, and much more than meets the eye.

The journey begins with a scenic 35-minute seaplane flight from Malé’s Velana International Airport – a mesmerising experience in itself.

As you soar above coral-ringed isles and shifting blues of the Indian Ocean, anticipation builds. Landing on the resort’s wooden jetty, I was welcomed with chilled towels, tropical drinks, and a cheerful team who made check-in feel more like arriving at a friend’s island home than a hotel.

From the very beginning, it’s clear that design matters here. There’s a clean, mid-century aesthetic throughout, softened by natural textures and Maldivian detailing. The whole place feels thoughtfully curated; relaxed and luxurious without ever being overdone.

The service here walks the perfect line between attentive and relaxed. Staff are friendly and polished, but never pushy. From the moment I arrived, I felt cared for – not in a corporate, rehearsed way, but in a genuinely kind, easy-going manner.

Sustainability is more than a side note at this resort. From on-site water bottling and solar initiatives to minimal-impact architecture and a commitment to reef preservation, eco-luxury is quietly woven into every part of the experience. The resort doesn’t make a fuss about it, it simply leads by example.

The resort offers a variety of villa options, including overwater villas with private pools

Le Méridien offers a variety of villa options, both overwater and beachfront, and each is wonderfully inviting.

I stayed in one of the sunset overwater villas with pool – a beautiful space with floor-to-ceiling glass, soft tones, and an elevated private infinity pool that looked straight out onto uninterrupted sea and sky. I’ll never forget sipping a glass of champagne as the sun dipped below the horizon, the whole deck bathed in gold.

Inside, all villas include king-sized beds, espresso machines, curated minibars, Malin+Goetz toiletries, and sustainable design details.

Beach garden pool villas are equally charming for those who prefer sand between their toes, while the spacious two-bedroom beach villas are perfect for families or friends travelling together.

Everything is designed to feel peaceful and open, from the gentle lighting to the quiet hush of the waves just beyond your terrace.

These aren’t spaces to just sleep in, they’re made for lingering.

Food and drink

Dining options include Tabemasu, a sleek Japanese venue featuring an omakase menu and teppanyaki experience

For a relatively intimate island, the dining scene is impressively diverse. With six food and drink venues, there’s something to suit every mood, from creative fine dining to wellness-forward bites.

Turquoise is the central restaurant, offering a vibrant mix of global flavours. Breakfasts here are generous and colourful – think tropical fruit, fresh bakes, Maldivian curry, and made-to-order omelettes enjoyed with sea breezes and soft island light.

But the real standout for me was Tabemasu, a sleek Japanese venue where the omakase menu and teppanyaki experience were both a delight. The sushi was exquisite, and I genuinely had one of the most entertaining and delicious teppanyaki dinners I’ve experienced in the Maldives. The chefs are showmen, and the cocktails were equally creative.

Destination dining experiences include romantic dinners on the beach

Velaa Bar and Grill, next to the main pool, is perfect for casual lunches and grilled seafood by day, then transforms into a buzzy social spot as the sun sets. Waves Café was another highlight – a peaceful, wellness-inspired eatery serving smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices, plant-based dishes, and light fare. After a spa treatment or morning swim, it felt like the perfect retreat.

Riviera Tapas and Bar, with its Mediterranean sharing plates and sangrias, brings a splash of Europe to the tropics – relaxed, sociable, and full of flavour.

There are also floating breakfasts, romantic beach barbecues, and beautifully arranged destination dining experiences available for those special celebratory moments.

Spa and wellness

Explore Spa by Le Méridien is a serene haven suspended above the lagoon. Treatment rooms have wide sea views and glass floor panels, so you can literally watch the fish swim below as you unwind. It’s a small but beautiful spa with an extensive treatment menu.

I opted for an aromatherapy massage which left me utterly blissed out. There’s also a well-equipped gym with lagoon views, and wellness activities like sunrise yoga and meditation to balance the indulgence with calm.

The house reef is easily accessible and teeming with marine life

Le Méridien Maldives encourages guests to be curious. Whether that means diving into the island’s rich marine life, learning about coral conservation, or simply exploring its hidden corners, there’s plenty to discover.

The house reef is easily accessible and full of life. Complimentary snorkelling gear, kayaks, and paddleboards are available, and the Marine Hub offers guided dives, sunset sails, and sandbank picnics.

During my stay, I joined a dolphin cruise – seeing them leap beside the boat was an unforgettable highlight.

The resort is also deeply engaged in sustainability. Guests can learn about coral propagation, support reef regeneration, and even get involved with the on-site environmental programmes in subtle but meaningful ways.

Families are wonderfully catered for too. Le Méridien’s family programme offers eco-conscious activities that go beyond the usual kids’ club – from marine biology sessions to hands-on crafts using natural island materials.

In a nutshell

Le Méridien Maldives Resort and Spa is the kind of place that doesn’t just dazzle; it charms, calms, and inspires. It offers that rare combination of thoughtful design, authentic service, meaningful experiences, and luxurious comfort – all set against one of the most beautiful backdrops on Earth.

For me, it felt refreshingly different from many of the Maldives’ better-known resorts. More creative, more soulful and more connected to its surroundings. Whether you’re watching a reef shark glide past your spa pavilion, enjoying sushi by moonlight, or paddling across a coral-fringed lagoon, everything here feels quietly special.

It’s definitely somewhere I’d return to, and recommend wholeheartedly.
