Serenely perched along the sun-drenched curve of the Adriatic, the idyllic Balkan destination of Montenegro glows like a secret between Croatia and Albania, unearthing a charming country so bijou, it could slip beneath your fingertips on a map, yet it basks in a vast cloak of serene beauty, rich history and a heartfelt homely soul.
A rustic backdrop with an elegant flair, it is here where colossal mountains plunge dramatically into the azure toned sea, and medieval towns gleam beneath terracotta rooftops. All the while the balmy air hums with the aromatic medley of woody pine, and bold salt illustrating the Riviera reborn, where the hush of ancient monasteries meets the gentle murmur of marina life, and every horizon, glitters with possibility.
In the northern corner, Kotor’s bay gleams like a silver mirror, guarded by fortress walls that have watched over sailors and poets for a thousand years, whereas to the south, Budva hums with cosmopolitan energy with its beaches brought to life by beau-monde cliques luxuriating with luminous champagne flutes and an endless flow of infectious laughter.
For everywhere in between, the stage scatters like jewels across the coastline, their charm amplified by the aromatic scent of bold espresso and wild thyme, drifting through open windows.

Luštica Bay is a modern marina village sculpted between untamed mountains and the endless blue of the Adriatic
Montenegro’s allure lies not just in its beauty, but in its balance, illustrating a perfect equilibrium of nature and sophistication. Where the Adriatic sparkles beneath snow-capped peaks and the wilderness of the Balkans is softened by the slow pulse of coastal luxury, it’s little wonder that the world’s gaze has begun to turn to this tiny, yet astonishing country that manages to feel both untouched, and utterly current.
And it is here on a secluded peninsula between Kotor and Tivat, that Luštica Bay emerges as Montenegro’s most captivating new chapter illustrating a wholesome destination that distils the very essence of the country that is pure, soulful and effortlessly stylish.
The destination
Luštica Bay rises like a magical mirage from Montenegro’s southern coast, a modern marina village sculpted between untamed mountains and the endless blue of the Adriatic.
From above it resembles a watercolour dream, of honey-toned stone façades terraced into the hillside, winding cobblestone lanes curling towards the sea and a sparkling marina lined with yachts, all glinting like luminous pearls in the sunlight.
Yet, despite its deep refinement, the homegrown essence plays to an organic tone with the architecture whispering of old Mediterranean towns, colossal archways, and sun-bleached balconies echoing many a century of native coastal charm.
Luštica Bay emerges as Montenegro’s most captivating new chapter illustrating a wholesome destination
Set amidst the radiant natural beauty of the Luštica Peninsula where the Adriatic meets the UNESCO protected Boka Bay, this emerging town vibes to both a modern and timeless spirit wallowing in close to 240 days of sunshine each year, as Luštica Bay basks in a golden light that lingers lazily across the water long after dusk.
A year-round destination, shifting gracefully throughout the seasons; the balmy summer months sparkle with the emerald sea waves and alfresco celebration, while the calmer winter interval hums with a union quiet sophistication, and local warmth, not to neglect the dashing spectacle of the sweeping landscape in every direction, wild and unspoilt yet gently shaped by design where its very position feels like poetry, poised between two seas and a thousand stories that unfold with every change of light.
Despite its sense of escape, Luštica Bay remains wonderfully connected, with three international airports nearby, with Tivat merely 12 kilometres away, and Dubrovnik 62, placing it within a minor three hours’ reach of most major European capitals.
New and extended flight routes have opened Montenegro to a more global gaze, yet Luštica Bay still retains the charm of a secret, an Adriatic hideaway where luxury feels personal and the pace deliciously unhurried.
It is this balance that defines Luštica Bay, the meeting of nature and architecture, wilderness and polish, authenticity and modern ease.
Here, luxury is never loud; it hums quietly in the rhythm of the waves, in the curve of limestone walls that catch the afternoon sun, in the soft glow of evening as the horizon turns to gold and the entire bay seems to exhale in perfect stillness.
A place to belong: The residences and retreats of Luštica Bay
Luštica Bay’s accommodation feels like a continuation of the landscape itself, showing off a seamless blend of stone, sea and sunlight
Luštica Bay’s accommodation feels like a continuation of the landscape itself, showing off a seamless blend of stone, sea and sunlight where every window frames a different shade of blue and every space seems to exhale a quiet sort of luxury.
The Chedi, poised elegantly along the marina stands as the bay’s crown jewel, a five-star sanctuary that captures the spirit of contemporary coastal living, where it’s palatial suites are dressed in cool neutrals and soft woods, and their private pristine terraces open onto the glittering horizon where yachts drift lazily at anchor.
The scent of salt and pine appears to hang in the balmy air as the pools mirror the sky, and the rhythm of the sea becomes a soundtrack to unhurried mornings and dusky evenings.
Embodying a blueprint of Asian-inspired minimalism that allows the natural beauty beyond its walls to take centre stage, the hotel thrives in its effortless aura coupled with intuitive hosting, and refined sybaritic affairs.
Nestled across the glittering waterfront backdrop, the Marina Village apartments rest in a quiet rhythm of sun and stone, created for those who understand that indulgence can whisper as eloquently as it shines.
Their façades glow honey gold beneath the soft afternoon light and the balconies are draped in bougainvillaea that spill gently towards the sea, the air carrying the scent of salt and jasmine.
From here the view stretches over the marina where yachts glimmer like silver brushstrokes across the water and the tide moves with a calm, hypnotic grace that seems to slow the heartbeat.

The apartments are designed for long, sun-drenched weeks rather than fleeting escapes
Inside, the apartments unfold with an effortless harmony of tone and texture, pale wood meeting cool limestone, linen curtains shifting in the breeze, and every surface catching the changing light of the day.
Less like places to simply stay, the apartments are designed for long, sun-drenched weeks rather than fleeting escapes, their quiet luxury expressed in space, stillness and the soft echo of the sea outside. The polished architecture draws from the old villages of the Mediterranean, yet moves with a modern composure all shaped for openness, privacy and effortless conversations between inside and out.
From the terrace, the marina lies below like a living canvas, masts tilting gently in the breeze, reflections trembling in the water, and the sound of laughter rising faintly from the promenade. It is Adriatic living at its most graceful, a portrait of serenity framed in sunlight and sea.
My own apartment abode in Centrale opened into a soft wash of Adriatic light, a one-bedroom sanctuary where everything seemed to breathe in rhythm with the slow pulse of the day from the very turn of the door, unveiling an airy living room bathed in a golden stillness that gathered against the pale walls and drifted across the polished floors, as the air carrying an almost faint scent of salt and wild herbs from the hills beyond.

From the humble yet elegant settings of the balcony, the view appeared to stretch over a mosaic of terracotta rooftops and winding lanes that glowed gently in the late afternoon sun, releasing a sense of life that moved quietly just out of sight with clicking footsteps on cobblestones, and the low hum of conversation carried through the balmy breeze.
Inside, linen cushions had caught the flaxen sunlight rays in soft folds where a slender vase of olive branches stood upon the table, and a chilled bottle of local prosecco sparkling with gusto, waited beside two fluted impeccably chilled flutes showing a gesture of welcome that felt perfectly in tune, with the tranquil grace of the my home from home.
The kitchen, discreetly designed and fully equipped, gleamed with quiet purpose, its simplicity invited the ease of slow mornings and unhurried suppers altogether embracing a deeply personal spirit, elegant without pretence to embody a luxe retreat that seemed to value silence as a rare and beautiful thing, together with a space where one could simply be suspended between sunlight, and stillness.
Gastronomy: A taste of the Adriatic
Every meal becomes an unhurried celebration of the sea as local cafés hum with the gentle clatter of porcelain and laughter
The rhythm of life at Luštica Bay seems to gather around the table, where every meal becomes an unhurried celebration of the sea as local cafés hum with the gentle clatter of porcelain and laughter, and sun-kissed terraces fill up slowly as the afternoon ripens against the sound of a wine or champagne cork easing open.
The Adriatic lends its character to every plate, and the cuisine moves with the seasons to showcase a vibrant uncomplicated sybaritic affair, all deeply rooted in its homeland. Graceful brasserie eateries see fresh out the water grilled fish kissed with smooth velvet olive oil, served with hearty bowls of mussels steaming in a light white wine and bold garlic creamed sauce as crisp salads sing to a symphony of flavours of the Mediterranean sun, all under the meticulous hosting carrying that quiet attentive rhythm, that truly defines the Montenegrin temperament.
At Kiki’s, the evening dining affairs had unfolded slowly beneath a sky bruised with violet and rose, the terrace wrapped in the scent of thyme and warm stone under the hum of jovial table conversations, blending with the murmur of the sea.
The table was laid simply, a linen cloth fluttering in the breeze and a candle flickering against the curve of a wine glass where I began with a helping of grilled king prawns, their shells still warm from the fire, and the flesh tender and translucent brushed with olive oil, garlic and a scattering of herbs that released their fragrance with each bite.
The risotto followed, soft and creamy, loaded with meaty prawns and generous pieces of vegetables that tasted as though they had been plucked straight from a garden that morning, each spoonful rich yet balanced by a faint whisper of citrus.
A bowl of pasta arrived glistening in truffle cream, the sauce smooth and aromatic, clinging to each strand like silk, its perfume deep and earthy against the freshness of the sea air whilst the steak was seared perfectly, its edges caramelised and the centre yielding and full of flavour for the juices to mingle with the faint sweetness of roasted garlic.

Everything was served without flourish yet with an instinctive elegance, the kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly what is good as the rosé wine kept flowing, pale and dry brimming with the taste of wild berries and summer air where, as the evening drew on, the sky turned the colour of apricots and the sea began to mirror the first lights of the village, everything folding into a single moment of quiet perfection.
Within the dining destination of LUČA, the morning moments had unfolded in that gentle, unhurried way that only coastal mornings can, the terrace looking out over the village as the sunlight glanced off the stone walls, and the sound of clinking glasses mingling with the low murmur of early AM catchups.
Breakfast had arrived as a quiet indulgence, a plate of scrambled eggs seasoned simply with black pepper and crowned with shards of feta and a trace of truffle, their fragrance curling upward into the golden air. Beside it sat a slice of cheese-filled burek, the pastry impossibly light and crisp with its buttery layers giving way to a molten centre that tasted of comfort and childhood and something distinctly Montenegrin. The orange juice was freshly pressed, glowing like liquid sunlight tart and sweet in perfect balance, and every sip seemed to sharpen the edges of the morning.
The service moved with practiced ease, the waiters smiling as they carried coffee to neighbouring tables, and the sound of soft jazz drifted lazily from inside.
There was no rush to the meal or no sense of schedule, but only the simple pleasure of food prepared with honesty and eaten slowly beneath a sky that promised another day of warmth and ease.
Sun-kissed terraces fill up slowly as the afternoon ripens against the sound of a wine or champagne cork easing open
The afternoons within the soirée utopia of Almara Beach Club carried the languid glamour of a Riviera dream, a place where bronzed shoulders gleamed beneath the sun and the rhythm of the music blended with the hush of the tide.
The décor was all pristine whites and pale woods, the kind of effortless chic that only appears when every detail has been considered but nothing tries too hard.
Snow white wooden floors gleamed beneath bare feet, as loungers stretched in precise lines towards the water and bronzed parasols rippled softly in the breeze spilling on to the sea beyond, shimmering in shades of emerald and glass its edge meeting mountains thick with wild botanicals, all catching the light in a hundred shades of bright, deep crisp green.
Not one to neglect the glitterati terrain of the bar, the aesthetics shimmered with polished bottles, each one catching the afternoon light, as bartenders shook ruby red cosmopolitans that sparkled like garnets against the sea and glasses of light rosé arrived chilled to perfection, pale and elegant, tasting faintly of wild strawberries and floral notes.
There was an infectious hum about the place, that particular kind of energy found only in beach clubs designed for those who measure time not by hours, but by how long the sunlight lasts.
Lunch was a slow, sun-drenched affair, served on a terrace that seemed to hover just above the water.
I indulged in grilled octopus, meaty and charred at the edges, its texture tender and smoky, brightened by a squeeze of fresh lemon that cut through the salt and olive oil.
The spaghetti came heaped with mussels and calamari, the sauce rich and briny carrying the essence of the Adriatic in every mouthful, while the lamb cutlets were pink and yielding within their caramelised crust, paired with chips so golden and crisp they shattered gently to the bite. Everything tasted vivid, alive, and utterly fresh, the kind of meal that lingers not in memory, but in sensation.
By the time the sun began to dip, the entire bay had turned to liquid gold, the music deepened to a slower pulse, and Almara shimmered like a scene caught between dream and desire, a perfect afternoon distilled into colour, taste and light.
The soul of the Adriatic: Montenegro’s coastal icons

The coastline holds many a wonder to discover
Along the western curve of the Luštica Peninsula, where the land folds into the Adriatic in a series of pale limestone cliffs, lies one of Montenegro’s most spellbinding wonders. The Blue Cave, known locally as Plava Špilja, hides within the rugged shoreline between Žanjice and Plavi Horizonti, a hollow carved by centuries of wind and tide, reachable only by boat.
The journey there is part of the seduction, a slow glide across turquoise water that deepens in colour as the cliffs rise higher, their faces streaked with silver and ochre. As the boat slips through the narrow entrance, the light changes completely; it becomes liquid, alive, refracted through a small opening beneath the surface so that the cave glows with an unearthly blue.
The water turns to molten sapphire, every movement creating a shimmer that dances across the stone walls, and the silence feels cathedral-like, broken only by the gentle echo of the sea.
It is one of those rare places that belong entirely to nature, timeless and untamed, and it reminds you how effortlessly beauty exists here.
From the caves, the journey continues towards the Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site often called the southernmost fjord in Europe, though technically it is a drowned river valley sculpted by glacial forces long before the first Venetian sails reached these shores.
The bay curves inward for nearly 30 kilometres, its mirrored surface framed by mountains that rise almost vertically from the water, their slopes dense with olive groves, cypress and wild rosemary.
Explore the coastlines and caves of the area by boat
At its heart rests the old town of Kotor, a fortified jewel built by Venetian stonemasons whose mark still lingers in every archway and piazza.
Within its labyrinth of cobbled streets, churches and courtyards, time seems to move differently; cats doze on marble steps, café tables spill lazily into the squares, and the sound of church bells drifts across the roofs with the same rhythm it has kept for centuries.
The climb to the fortress above is steep and winding but rewarded by a view so vast it seems to gather the whole of the Adriatic into a single breath.
Further along the bay, Perast appears like a scene remembered from a dream. With a population of barely three hundred, it feels untouched by urgency, its Baroque façades leaning gently towards the water, their colours soft and sun-bleached.
Just offshore float the twin islets of St George and Our Lady of the Rocks, each crowned by a chapel whose reflection trembles in the stillness of the bay.
The first holds a monastery surrounded by dark cypress, the second an artificial island built stone by stone by sailors returning from the sea, each voyage marked by a rock dropped into the water as an offering of gratitude. Together they create a vision so perfect in proportion and light that painters and poets have long struggled to capture it.
It is in these parts of Montenegro where everything feels suspended between sea and sky.
The landscape is theatrical yet intimate, shaped by history but softened by time and as the day fades, the entire bay glows in a silvery stillness that feels almost sacred. It is not just scenery, but an experience of grace demonstrating the kind that lingers long after the journey home.
Luštica Bay showcases not just another lavish destination, but a way of living and a place where modern grandeur and natural beauty exist in melodic harmony
In a nutshell
Montenegro has a way of slipping under the skin not with spectacle, but with a flair of subtlety and a legion of captivating moments that arrive quietly and refuse to leave.
It is in the way the morning light drifts across Luštica Bay, soft as silk against the stone or how the air tastes faintly of rosemary and salt together moving to a rhythm that feels instinctive, illustrating a kind of Mediterranean heartbeat that invites you to slow down, take notice and, simply, breathe.
Luštica Bay had proved triumphant in capturing this spirit perfectly, showcasing not just another lavish destination, but a way of living and a place where modern grandeur and natural beauty exist in melodic harmony.
The days unfold easily here – mornings begin with coffee and sunlight spilling across the terrace, as afternoons hum with sea breeze and laughter, and evenings linger long after the last glass of wine has been poured.
What stays with you most is not a single sight or flavour, but the way it all connects from the shimmer of the Adriatic, the golden stone to the taste of truffle and sea air against the hum of a place still half in an idyllic dream state.
While Montenegro is small in size, it holds within it a kind of vastness and beauty that feels untouched and utterly its own leaving one reluctant to depart carrying its warmth like sunlight on the skin, certain that some part of you will always find its way back to the edge of that shining blue.
